Choose a single entrance door when one leaf can provide the required clear passage without becoming unnecessarily heavy or awkward. Choose a double door when the project needs a wider occasional opening, a strongly symmetrical facade or easier handling of two narrower leaves. An unequal double door often gives the most practical middle ground.
For normal daily entry, a well-sized single door is simpler to operate and seal. A double door earns its extra hardware and meeting-stile detail when people regularly move large furniture, the opening is too wide for a sensible hinged leaf, or the architecture calls for a centered pair. Do not choose from the facade elevation alone. Compare the active-leaf clear width, total leaf weight, wind exposure, sill, locks, bolts and installation access.

Start with clear opening, not overall width
A drawing may show a 1,800 mm entrance, but that number could describe the masonry opening, the outside of the frame or the visible architectural width. None of those automatically equals usable passage. Jambs, door stops, hinges, pull handles and the open leaf all reduce clear width.
Accessibility rules make this distinction concrete. The U.S. Access Board measures clear width between the door face and the opposite stop with a hinged leaf open 90 degrees. Its guidance requires at least 32 inches for covered openings and says that one active leaf of a double-leaf door must meet the applicable clear-width and maneuvering-clearance criteria.[1] This is a U.S. accessibility rule, not a universal residential size. The project team must identify the governing code and occupancy before ordering.
Think about the door on an ordinary Tuesday
Double doors photograph well with both leaves open. Most owners will not operate them that way every day. The useful question is whether the active leaf alone feels comfortable for people carrying bags, using a mobility aid or passing through with a child. If the active leaf is narrow, the grand total width does not solve the daily problem.
The passive leaf also needs a defined routine. Surface bolts can be easy to inspect but may interrupt the appearance. Concealed flush bolts look cleaner, yet their top and bottom engagement must line up with the head and sill. On exterior doors, that hardware detail intersects with weather seals and drainage. A drawing should show the solution rather than leave it to the installer.
Leaf weight changes the decision
Making one hinged leaf wider can reduce the need for a meeting stile, but it also moves more mass through every opening cycle. The hardware supplier needs the actual leaf weight, center of gravity, door dimensions and usage level. A visual hinge count is not a load calculation.
Two narrower leaves distribute the total entrance width across two hardware sets. That can make fabrication and operation more manageable, but the passive leaf introduces bolts, coordinators or additional locking parts depending on the specification. It is not automatically cheaper or more reliable. The complete schedule decides that.
A pivot door is a separate decision from leaf count. A single pivot can accept a visually wide panel because the pivot axis sits within the leaf, but some of the panel remains on the tail side of the axis. That affects the effective passage, floor box, ceiling or head detail and weather sealing. Review the pivot door guide before treating a wide pivot as a direct substitute for a pair of hinged leaves.
A double door has one more difficult joint
The meeting stile is where the two leaves meet. On an exterior pair it must manage air, wind-driven rain, movement and lock engagement. Astragals, overlapping profiles and compression seals can all work, but only when the opening sequence and hardware match the profile.
If both leaves carry decorative panels, the manufacturer also has to control alignment across the centerline. A small leaf-position error becomes visible in a continuous pattern. This is where factory assembly matters. The centerline is a production datum
On a double door, the design does not stop at the render. The centerline controls the split between leaves, pattern continuity, lock position, astragal profile and the relationship between top and bottom bolts. Approve the elevation and section together.
Which configuration fits your project?
Choose a single door when
The active opening alone meets the required clear passage, the leaf weight stays within the selected hardware capacity and simple exterior sealing matters more than facade symmetry. A single leaf with fixed sidelights can create a wide visual composition without turning every glazed or decorative panel into an operating part.
Choose an equal double door when
The project needs a broad clear opening on a recurring basis or the elevation depends on a centered pair. Plan how the passive leaf locks, how both leaves sequence, and who will open the full entrance when deliveries or large objects arrive.
Choose an unequal double door when
Normal traffic can pass through one comfortable active leaf, but the project occasionally needs more width. This configuration is often called an active/passive leaf door or asymmetrical double entry door. Use those terms in an international RFQ instead of relying only on the regional phrase "mother-son door."

The practical verdict
A single door is the sensible default because it is simple to use, specify and seal. Move to an equal double door when the project can explain what the second leaf accomplishes. If the answer is "we need the width occasionally," an unequal pair deserves serious consideration.
Whichever configuration you choose, approve the clear opening and hardware schedule before approving the decorative elevation. A beautiful pair that provides an undersized active passage or poorly detailed center joint is a drawing problem, not a material problem.

Is a double entrance door more secure than a single door?
Not automatically. Security depends on the tested door assembly, frame anchors, locks, strike reinforcement, passive-leaf bolts, glazing and installation. A second leaf adds a meeting stile that must be secured correctly.
Do both leaves of a double door open?
They can, but most pairs use one active leaf for daily traffic and one secured passive leaf. The quotation and hardware schedule should state how the passive leaf is released and locked.
What is an unequal double entrance door?
It is a pair with one wider active leaf and one narrower passive leaf. The active leaf handles normal entry, while opening the passive leaf provides extra width when needed.
Are double doors harder to weatherproof?
